Soundgarden

O Soundgarden foi um dos principais grupos do grunge, movimento que deu nova vida ao rock no começo dos anos 90 e trouxe para o mundo bandas como Pearl Jam, Mudhoney, Alice in Chains e o Nirvana.

A banda foi formada em 1984 na cidade de Seattle, Washington, por Hiro Yamamoto [baixo], Kim Thayl [guitarra], Chris Cornell [vocais] e Scott Sundquist [bateria]. Em 1986, Scott Sundquist saiu da banda, deixando o seu lugar para Matt Cameron.

Em 1987, o Soundgarden lançou o seu primeiro EP, 'Screaming Life', pela então recém-fundada gravadora Sub Pop. Ainda pela Sub Pop, a banda lançou outro EP, 'Fopp', em 1988. No entanto, o primeiro álbum do grupo, 'Ultramega OK', foi lançado pela gravadora SST, em 1988.

Na seqüência, a banda assinou contrato com uma grande gravadora, a A&M Records. Em 1989, saiu o segundo álbum, 'Louder Than Love'. Após o lançamento de 'Louder Than Love', o baixista Yamamoto deixou a banda, sendo substituído por Jason Everman, que havia tocado com o Nirvana. Jason Everman também não ficou muito tempo no grupo, e em seu lugar entrou Ben Shepperd.

'Badmotorfinger', de 1991, e 'Superunknown', de 1994, foram os álbuns que fizeram o grupo mundialmente conhecido com o seu "grunge metal", trazendo os hits "Rusty Cage", "Jesus Christ Pose", "The Day I Tried to Live" e "Black Hole Sun".

Em 1996, o Soundgarden lançou o seu quinto álbum de estúdio, 'Down on the Upside'. O disco não teve o mesmo sucesso que os dois anteriores. E, em 1997, a banda se desfez. Em 2001, Chris Cornell se juntou a Tom Morello, Tim Commerford e Brad Wilk [os três músicos do Rage Against the Machine], e formaram o Audioslave, banda na qual atuou até 2007.

No início de 2010, o Soundgarden anunciou o retorno. A banda fez alguns shows, incluindo uma apresentação no festival Lollapalooza, e lançou uma compilação, intitulada 'Telephantasm'. A banda também começou a trabalhar em um novo álbum, 'King Animal', que foi lançado em novembro de 2012.

Em 18 de maio de 2017, Chris Cornell foi encontrado morto em um quarto de hotel de Detroit, horas depois de se apresentar com o Soundgarden no Fox Theatre, na cidade. Ele tinha 52 anos e sua morte foi considerada suicídio por enforcamento.
