O cenário pós-punk britânico no início dos anos 80 fez surgir uma das bandas de rock mais brilhantes que unia com perfeição a simplicidade e harmonia da guitarra, uma voz inconfundível, com letras que falavam de política com um humor ácido ou uma sensibilidade incomum sobre os conflitos da alma. The Smiths foi uma banda que durou pouco mais de cinco anos mas o seu legado musical e poético influencia bandas até hoje.
A velha Manchester na Inglaterra passava por uma fase de decadência após quase dois séculos de intensa industrialização e o desemprego assolava a maior parte da população operária. A falta de perspectiva, principalmente nos jovens era extremamente grande. Foi nesse contexto que surgiu The Smiths. Um guitarrista brilhante de descendência irlandesa, nascido em Manchester procurava por outras pessoas para montar uma banda. John Martin Maher (Johnny Marr) trabalhava numa loja de roupas chamada X Clothes em 1982. Desde os tempos da escola, ele tocava guitarra brilhantemente com seu amigo de infância Andy Rourke (baixista) em sucessivas bandas que soavam como o rock norte americano: Tom Petty e Neil Young em particular. Porém após algumas tentativas frustadas, ainda faltava um cantor decente.
Então John lembrou-se de uma pessoa que havia encontrado por um breve momento num show da Patti Smith, anos atrás, quando ele tinha apenas 15 anos. Era o mesmo rapaz que estava um dia numa banda chamada The Nosebleeds junto com o guitarrista Billy Duff (depois pertenceu à banda The Cult) e que escrevia letras particularmente incomuns. Tanto John como esse cantor tinham um amigo em comum, Steven Pomfret que incentivou John a procurá-lo. Então, em maio de 1982, John Martin Maher de Wythenshawe, pegou um ônibus até a King’s Road, Stretford e bateu a porta de número 384. E encontrou Steven Patrick Morrissey que assim como Maher, de descendência irlandesa nascido em 22 de maio de 1959, Manchester. Mergulhado em livros de Oscar Wilde e filmes de James Dean, seu gosto musical caminhava por rock’n’ roll dos anos 50 (como Elvis Presley), bandas de garotas dos anos 60 (The Marvelettes, The Cookies, Sandie Shaw) e bandas glam rock dos anos 70 (T Rex, Sparks, Bowie) e punk (New York Dolls, Patti Smiths, Buzzcocks).
Encontrado o cantor, posteriormente chamaram um baterista de 19 anos, Mike Joyce, que conhecia Maher apenas de vista na X Clothes e que foi apresentado a a Maher por um amigo em comum. Este ficou impressionado com a habilidade e a energia de Joyce. Depois Andy Rourke foi chamado para substituir Dale Hibbert e completou-se a banda. John Maher mudou seu nome para Johnny Marr para não ser confundido com outro famoso John Maher em Manchester. Formava-se então The Smiths, nome escolhido por Morrissey.
No início da carreira, uma curiosidade é que a banda mandou uma fita demo para a Factory Records de Manchester, mas nem o dono do selo, Tony Wilson, nem o empresário do New Order, Rob Gretton ficaram impressionados com o material.
O primeiro single que realmente fez sucesso (mas não a primeira música do The Smiths) e que fez com que a banda ficasse conhecida fora de Manchester foi “Hand in Glove” de 1983, que começou a tocar nas rádios britânicas. Lançado pelo selo independente Rough Trade, a banda se destacava pela voz inimitável de Morrissey e seu lirismo, além de um arranjo simples mas consistente das guitarras de Marr e com um baixo e bateria que inspiravam energia. “This Charming Man” foi o single seguinte, lançado no mesmo ano que consolidou o sucesso da banda. O primeiro álbum surgiu em Fevereiro de 1984 intitulada “The Smiths”. Em novembro do mesmo ano a banda lança “Hatful of Hollow” com músicas memoráveis como “Heaven Knows I’m Miserable Now” e “How Soon is Now”. Em Fevereiro de 1985 surge o álbum “Meat is Murder”, com clara defesa ao vegetarianismo. “The Queen is Dead” foi lançado em Junho de 1985, o título com dura crítica ao governo britânico, contém músicas inesquecíveis como “The Boy With the Thron in His Side”, “Bigmouth Strikes Again” e “There is a Light That Never Goes Out”.
Nessa época Andy Rourke foi substituído pelo baixista Craig Gannon (ex-Aztec Camera), por estar envolvido com drogas, mas logo retornou à banda. A coletânea “The World Won’t Listen” foi lançada em março de 1987 e logo em seguida nos EUA surge a coletânea “Louder Than Bombs” em maio do mesmo ano. O último álbum da banda foi “Strangeways Here We Come” de Setembro de 1987 com músicas como “Stop me if You think You’ve Heard This One Before”, “Girlfriend in a Coma” e “Lats Night I Dreamt That Somebody Loved Me”. Após o final da banda, surgem ainda em Setembro de 1988 é o álbum “Rank”, gravado ao vivo e em 1992 os álbuns “Best I” e “Best II”, além de uma coletâneas de vídeos. Foi lançado ainda “Singles” e o último lançamento foi o álbum de coletâneas “The Very Best of The Smiths”.
A banda terminou em 1987 quando Johnny Marr decidiu sair da banda e junto com ele The Smiths chegaria ao fim. Depois dos Smiths, Marr tocou com muitas bandas como The Pretenders (que veio ao Brasil em 1988 junto com Marr), The The e Bryan Ferry. Em 1989 Johnny Marr juntou-se ao seu amigo Bernard Sumner do New Order para formar o duo Electronic que lançou três álbuns: Electronic, Raise de Pressure e Twisted Tenderness, este último de 2000. Esses trabalhos contaram com colaborações preciosas dos Pet Shop Boys e Karl Bartos do Kraftwerk. Johnny Marr ainda formou outra banda chamada Johnny Marr and The Healers.
Morrissey não encontrou alternativa a não ser seguir carreira solo. Bem sucedida, diga-se de passagem mas nenhum dos dois, nem Morrissey nem Marr conseguiram mais o mesmo brilho e genialidade que tinham juntos nos Smiths. Morrissey tem uma legião enorme de fãs pelo mundo todo que o adoram, mas ele mesmo confessou inúmeras vezes que Johnny fazia falta.
Andy Rourke e Mike Joyce tocaram algumas músicas com Morrissey depois do fim da banda. Porém, brigas por direitos autorais na justiça separaram ainda mais os membros da banda.
O que fazia do The Smiths especial era a união perfeita de letras e músicas de Morrissey e Marr. A voz fragilizada de Morrissey, que expressava os conflitos de sua alma, revelava também um homem consciente de sua época, não poupando criticas e sarcasmo a política britânica e à família real. Johnny Marr por sua vez, marcava o seu estilo com arranjos harmônicos de guitarra, diferentes das outras bandas de rock da mesma época, sem apelações. E todo este trabalho ganhava um acabamento diferenciado de bateria e baixo.
